Bacup Rendering: Straight Walls, No Fuss

Rendering and Exterior Plastering is regular work in Bacup, and it is regular for a reason. Intact Victorian stone terraces and mill housing, much of it in a conservation area, built to breathe and sitting high with severe wind-driven rain exposure. Those conditions produce the same handful of problems again and again, which after a few hundred of them means Lee is quoting from experience of your actual house type rather than from a rate card.

Repairs and patching are just as much of the work as full elevations. A section that has blown around a downpipe, cracking above a lintel, or a previous render that was applied straight onto an unsuitable background. Those get cut back to something sound, the cause addressed, and the repair matched into what is there. Where matching an existing weathered render convincingly is not realistic, Lee will say so rather than leaving you with a patchwork wall.

Detailing is what makes render last, far more than the product on the bag. Bellcast beads at the base so water throws clear of the wall instead of tracking back behind it. Proper stop beads at every opening. Movement joints where the background changes from stone to block. And a scratch coat left to cure properly before the top coat goes anywhere near it. Every failed render you can point at on a Lancashire main road failed at one of those details, not in the mix.

In Bacup that usually shows up in the preparation rather than the finish. The trowelling is the same trade wherever you are; what changes town to town is how much work the background needs before any of it goes on. Underquote that stage and the job either overruns or the finish suffers, which is why rendering and exterior plastering here gets looked at properly before a figure is given.

Exposure at this end of the valley is genuinely severe. Bacup, Weir and Britannia sit high, and wind-driven rain arrives sideways for days at a stretch through the winter, with freeze-thaw working on anything holding water. External work here is planned with the weather rather than against it: render dates carry some flexibility, coats are not rushed on ahead of a bad spell, and the detailing that actually keeps water off the wall gets the time it needs. A bellcast bead at the base and a proper stop bead at every opening are not extras here, they are the whole point.

Internally, the recurring work is what you would expect from housing of this age and this climate. Ceilings with textured coating that people now want flat. Cold, solid external walls where insulated dry lining makes a real and immediately noticeable difference to how a room feels. Blown patches around chimney breasts and behind downpipes, where water has been getting in outside and showing up inside. That last one is the important one, because plastering over it without stopping the water only buys a season.

Practicalities. A single elevation is typically several days including cure time between coats, and depends heavily on the weather. Priced per elevation and driven mostly by area, access and whether scaffold is needed. External work is also weather-dependent, so dates get set with a bit of give in them.
