Plastering Rishton's Canal-Side Terraces

The housing is mostly terraced, largely from the same weaving-era boom that built the towns either side of it, with later estate housing filling in around the edges. The older stock is solid walled and has the usual accumulation of decades of alteration on it: filled fireplaces, chased-in wiring, ceilings coated over, and patches of varying quality. The jobs that follow from that are predictable, and being predictable means they can be quoted accurately and finished when they were said to be finished.

Being a small village has one genuine practical advantage: word travels. On a street where one house has been done, the neighbours tend to see the result and the van, and a fair amount of the work here arrives that way rather than through advertising. That is worth more than any marketing, and it is also a strong reason to leave a job tidy and finish when promised, because in a village of this size a badly handled job is known about by the weekend.

Small jobs are welcome here and viable, which is not always true of a village this size for tradesmen coming from further afield. A single ceiling, a stairwell, a made-good after a boiler move: all sensible half-day and one-day work when it is on the route rather than at the end of a long drive. The canal-side and older streets throw up one recurring issue worth flagging before it becomes a surprise. Properties that back onto the water, or that sit low relative to the ground around them, are more prone to damp arriving from outside than the housing further up the hill, and it tends to show first as a blown patch low down on an external wall or a stain that keeps coming back in the same corner. That is not a plastering problem, it is a water problem with a plastering symptom, and it wants the ground levels, the pointing and the rainwater goods looking at before anybody replasters anything.

Aside from that, the work here is the ordinary run of things and none the worse for it. Textured ceilings that people want flat. Rooms that have had one patch too many and are better done as a whole. Chases and box cut-outs made good after an electrician. Rooms turned round between tenancies on the rental stock that sits mixed in among the owner-occupied streets. Straightforward jobs, quoted honestly, finished on the day they were promised and cleared up properly at the end, which in a village this size is the only reputation worth having.
