LD Plastering

BB5 · Hyndburn

Church is one of the smaller Hyndburn townships, sitting on the canal right on Accrington's western edge, and it is effectively covered as part of the same area. Its housing is largely older terraced stock with the industrial history of the Hyndburn valley behind it, and it produces the same reliable mix of ceilings, skims and made-good repairs as its bigger neighbour.

The terraces here are solid walled and have been through the same century of alteration as everywhere else in the valley: chimney breasts opened and closed, wiring chased in, ceilings coated over in the seventies, and repairs of varying quality layered on top of one another. None of that is difficult work, but it does mean that reading the wall before starting matters more than it would in a modern house where you know exactly what is behind the surface.

Being small and being right next to Accrington means Church is genuinely convenient to cover, which keeps small jobs sensible. A single ceiling flattened, a stairwell skimmed, or making good after a plumber has been in are all half-day to one-day jobs, and they get priced as such rather than being loaded to make the trip worthwhile. That is the practical difference between a closely run local team and a firm covering the North West.

The usual honest caveats apply here as everywhere: where a wall genuinely only needs a patch, that is what gets recommended, and where a damp patch is coming from a gutter or a downpipe rather than from the wall itself, you get told to sort that first. Replastering over live water is a job you pay for twice, and nobody who wants to work in a township this size for any length of time can afford to make a habit of it.

Church shares Accrington's brick as well as its streets, and the same practical point follows from it. The local brick is dense and low in suction compared with the softer Victorian brick used across much of Lancashire, so it does not pull water out of a coat the way people expect. Treated like a thirsty background it can be slow to grab, and a coat that has not keyed properly is one that hollows out behind the surface a year later. It is a small adjustment in primer and approach rather than anything difficult, but it does have to be made deliberately.

The work itself runs to a familiar list. Flat ceilings over old textured coatings. Full rooms where filler, paper and paint have built up past the point where another patch is worth paying for. Chimney breasts opened up or blocked off and needing the background rebuilding before the finish can sit level. Chases and cut-outs made good after a rewire or a boiler move. All of it a day or two, all of it sheeted properly, and all of it with the debris going at the end rather than being left stacked in the yard.

Common questions

Plastering In Church: Your Questions

Do you actually cover somewhere as small as Church?

Yes. Church sits right on Accrington's edge and is covered on the same rounds, so it is convenient rather than out of the way. Small jobs here are viable and get priced as small jobs.

How much does plastering cost in Church?

A single room including the ceiling is generally in the low hundreds. Half-day repairs are priced as half days. Quotes are free with no call-out charge, and photos are often enough for small work.

What can be done about a textured ceiling in Church?

Two things, and which one depends on a tap test rather than a preference. A thin coating still firmly keyed to what is above it gets sealed and skimmed flat in a day. One that sounds hollow, or that has been laid on heavily, wants overboarding underneath, which costs a little more and gives a ceiling that will not move again.

There is a damp patch on my wall. Can you plaster over it?

Not while it is still getting wet. It is usually a gutter, a downpipe or failed pointing outside. Fix that first and the internal repair lasts. Plaster over live water and the stain comes back through within months.

Do you make good after plumbers and electricians?

Regularly. Chases, holes behind removed fittings and boxed-in pipework all need bringing back flat so the decorator has a proper surface. It is worth timing the plastering to follow those trades closely.

How quickly can you come out?

Quotes are usually within a few days and small repairs can often be fitted in the same week, since Church is on the Accrington round rather than a separate journey.

Do you cover Church Kirk as well?

Yes, along with the adjoining parts of Oswaldtwistle, Clayton-le-Moors and Accrington itself.

Will you work around us living in the house?

Yes, that is how nearly all of it is done. One room at a time, everything sheeted before a bag is opened, and the debris cleared at the end of each day.

Is the stairwell worth doing at the same time as a room?

Usually, because the access is the expensive part and it only gets set up once. Doing a bedroom now and the stairwell in six months means paying twice for the same preparation. It is also the surface every visitor sees first, and the one that shows a poor patch most.

How do I know you will turn up when you say?

Checkatrade scores LD Plastering on reliability and communication separately from quality, and both sit at 10 out of 10 across 69 reviews. Turning up when promised is most of what the reviews actually say.

Lee gave me a fair price after looking at my photo of the job. He kept in touch and arrived bang on time 2 days later. Very respectful and did a first class job. He also let me know what the job entailed. Tidied up afterwards as well. I would definitely use this company again.
